Reasons to Retreat with Richard: #7 Creative? Hell Yeah!
Richard was founder and director of Creative Yoga London which later evolved into Creative Wellness. During this time he created, organised and taught some of London’s most unique classes and events. Seeing a lack of connection between students in the yoga world, and a lack of community generally – which is somewhat at odds with Yoga’s essence of Union – he was motivated to create classes and events where people could engage and feel the joy of practice as a whole.
He ran London’s biggest weekly yoga class and social ‘Social Yoga Tuesday‘ for many years, introducing hundreds of new students to the practice, enjoying the accessibility of the practice and a visit to the pub afterwards! Singles Yoga achieved international recognition, providing a class for students to take their sense of comfort and embodiment into the sphere of relationship, with the Couples Yoga classes going even deeper. Yoga Rave London was just an epic yoga event, attracting up to 100 participants with a live DJ and dancing!
There is a continual creative evolution happening in society, and while Richard is keen to always have the essence and purity of yoga as union at the centre of his practice, it would also be naive to think that we share the same conditions and circumstances as the cultures in which yoga originated. We all love the classic yoga images of someone sitting by the side of a lake or up a mountain in Lotus position, but the last time I checked my daily urban routine of the Northern Line into Camden wasn’t passing any great masses of water, the air definitely isn’t mountain quality and my nervous system was most definitely not tranquil!
I can give you all that on a retreat at Moinhos Velhos so you can appreciate what quiet and still yoga feels like – as it fits to that environment – it’s uber peaceful – but I also know what it’s like to live like in the creative cauldron of London! So after having the uber peaceful zen experience on retreat you then have perspective about the stress that is hitting you, and can make changes!
