Why Suffer at Work?
So what’s going on here? Why do so many of us suffer from such stress and lack of nourishment from our chosen job. What I see a lot, is rather than someone’s job being an extension of their inner passions and innate abilities, is that going to work is more like going to battle! People putting themselves through all kinds of circumstances in order to generate income to support the rest of their life – to then act as an antidote to the strain of work. And so it continues…
Problem is, even if you are super focused at work to the point you may not be consciously registering the strain (as the body has all kinds of stress fighting mechanisms to keep the mind focused and see you through the battle) your body still does! Oh yes, the vehicle that we live in doesn’t have a moments downtime from whatever environment we are placing it in. It registers everything, often creating chronic strain.
So Why Are We So Bad at Looking After Ourselves In This Area Of Our Life?
So lets get something straight from the off. No one here is stupid, if you’re reading this page then you most likely have a good job, one which maybe you even studied many years for. So what goes wrong? How do we often get this ‘looking after ourselves’ so badly wrong? Even animals and plants seem to have this ‘how to live’ thing relatively well figured out. Given the right circumstances, their ability to follow their instincts combined with having their basic needs met means a happy thriving creature.
See it works like this. All aspects of creation have an inbuilt awareness of what they need to do to thrive, it’s just built in from day one. Look around you – does anyone need to stand over other parts of nature and give an instruction manual of how to survive? So since you are also part of nature (although we often forget) it’s also within your natural awareness, and given decently fertile soil in your life it will happen.
Little or No Holistic Education at School
But as human beings are we often left grasping around in the dark when it comes to wellbeing as crucially there are often two massive voids in our education in this matter of wellbeing. Firstly, throughout our formative years, particularly in the western culture, we are often given very little intellectual information about wellbeing practices. Looking back I never had any formal education at school relating to any self-care practices, and this is the age where a lot of our behaviours and tendencies become anchored in. So this is a problem, particularly as bad habits also get anchored in instead!
And secondly, we also aren’t educated in how to listen to what our body’s are calling for, to understand the bodies signs and signals and practices that enable us to tune in.
So we have both a lack of the conceptual information, the ‘instructions’ if you like of how to look after ourselves, and also a lack of skills of hearing and interpreting our bodies signals as well.
Plenty of this site is dedicated to practices of being able to attune to your body’s needs – the type of yoga I teach puts you in tune with your body’s innate wisdom – so here it’s the turn of the intellect to do some catching up and be fed and nourished with some great information.
The Power of Understanding
If you are lost, how do you feel when someone hands you a map showing you the way to go? A sense of relief? So the wellbeing workshops and Holistic Education sessions are the map. This process of conscious understanding can act as a curative bridge between the conscious and unconscious mind. And this next point is crucial:
It’s all about understanding the bigger picture when it comes to health.
Otherwise what happens is that we are constantly making the next turn down what looks like an attractive avenue of the next fad diet, super food or exercise regime only to find it’s actually another dead end!
So we’re going to skip detail, for now. Forget whether it’s better to do your 20 mins of yoga and jog before or after work, or what way you should be cooking your eggs in the morning. Getting a basic understanding of the forces that govern you as a human being on the planet will stand you in much better stead. Sort the ‘trunk’ of your life out and the branches will follow!
Understand the Anatomy of Being a Healthy Human
And this is what I offer through my Holistic Education and Wellbeing Workshop sessions, I teach the basic anatomy of being a healthy human being so you can understand what you need to thrive.
And can this work be confronting? Yes of course, as you have to address the whole arena of whether you are actually in the right line of work in the first place. As if you don’t enjoy your work, if it doesn’t fit your life purpose, then that’s a whole other layer of internally generated strain on top of any externally challenging conditions which may also be prevalent in your workplace.
Now before HR Managers do a runner thinking they don’t want to bring this degree of contemplation to the workforce, what is your preference? To have people working for you who are bright, enthusiastic and motivated, or people who are intensely stressed? (Note ‘intense’ – the tension is generated inside as they aren’t happy internally)
Putting aside this internal level of contemplation, improving the workplace conditions can often significantly alter the perspective in any case. Someone may not feel that the present job is really right for them due to the workplace wellbeing ethos not being very good, but improve employee satisfaction with some holistic goodies such as workplace yoga or wellbeing workshops and watch the mood shift! People like to be looked after.
Over to you.
